Road Trip Around Iceland
Jun 17 - Jul 1, 2023

We planned to go to Iceland in 2020 but Covid hit. In 2021, the day before my visa interview, I was informed that they stopped issuing visa again due to rising covid cases. Now it is the 3rd time and it is HAPPENING!
However it wouldn’t happen without covid story. Three years, others were getting covid. I was in China during the time almost everyone had it. We both survived the whole time. Three weeks prior to our trip, I got covid and Erik got covid and we didn’t know where it came from🤔. Timing couldn’t be more perfect. Protection preparation before the trip! :)
Getting visa is a lot of work. Many documents were needed. Whenever I was applying for visa, I wanted US passport so badly!

I bought new bags for our traveling after pandemic. Erik got a new toy to vacuum seal his socks and underwear.

D1 Jun 17-18: Reykjavik
Departed at 11:15pm and arrived at 9am. Tough flight when you couldn’t sleep well but so tired, especially for a big guy. Got our car around 11:30am.
We grabbed a quick lunch before our lagoon time. Sourdough beef sandwich and chicken spread. Very tasty. I saw the sink with water. I went over and washed my hands and got napkins next to it. Later on, Erik told me it wasn’t for washing hands but drinking water…eh…make sense I guess, especially the glasses were next to it. 🥴

We went to Sky lagoon for two hours. Nothing better than relaxing in hot spring in a 55 degree rainy day. We bought a package including a seven-step ritual. Well, Erik realized right away we started with the third step already when we were going into the hot sauna. I guess the first one was the lagoon and the second one was the cold water pool that not many went. Oh well. The 4th one is a cold water mist where we were for less than 10 seconds. Then we were told to put a little plate of salt on our body which was the 5th step. The 6th step was steam sauna. Erik opened the door and he said his eyes got all foggy and left right away. You couldn’t see anything there, but steam. I already felt like it was a ripoff, so I was going to stay for the value! And stay for Erik’s as well! Last step was a shower. For more than $20, Erik got salt all over his body and took two showers! 😂

Special day for both of us: my birthday and Father’s Day. we treated ourselves for a good dinner.

D2 Jun 19: Golden circle
Thingvellir National park, UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is between two tectonic plates, North American and Eurasia.

Geyser Geothermal Area. We liked it but after seeing Yellow Stone’s, this is smaller.
Gulfoss. One of the most impressive waterfalls we have seen.
Kerid crater.

D3 Jun 20 Waterfalls, Beach
From far away, Erik pointed out those are the waterfalls we will stop by first. They look small and quiet.

Seljalandsfoss. We were so ready to get wet and we did! It has amazing view all around, from the moment you got closer to it, then go behind the falls until you came out. We enjoyed every moment of it. I love the power when the falls hits the water!

How many falls can you enjoy on a trip? Two already in a row. Can there be another one you can enjoy? In Iceland, absolutely yes!
Skogafoss and Skoga Trail. Another waterfall that you don’t go around but can get really close and be blown wet😀. After got wet, we went to see the top of the falls. Skago trail wasn’t in our plan, but both of us enjoyed playing by ear and went with it, ie, hiked part of the trail. Well, one of us did keep wanting to go back while the other one kept wanting to explore! It was such a nice hike along the water and you see different waterfalls and canyons…sheep eating and relaxing on the green, birds flying around and singing…when you are soaked in the nature, happiness rises in you.

Dyrholaey peninsula and Reynisfjara Beach. The peninsula didn’t sound particularly interesting to me, but since we had time, we stopped by. Reynisfjara beach, the black sand beach, though, was very interesting. We were so lucky to be there during the low tides and not much wind that we were able to enjoy our walk and see so many different shapes of the rocks on the side of the mountains. I haven’t seen anything like this and it was so fascinating to me!

D4 Jun 21 South - East Iceland
What a day! We left at 10am and got to hotel around 9pm. From south to east, we drove through green mountains, moss covered lava land, black sand, golden mountains, purple mountains, mountains with glaciers, flat terrains…the country is a park by itself. Driving in Iceland will never be tired.
Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon trail, picture 4-6. Skaftafell National Park - Svartifoos trail, picture 1-2. Glacier view point by route 1, picture 3.

A preview of Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and Diamond beach. I got so excited on the first sight of the glacier lagoon. I have never seen anything like this. A lake floating with icebergs! And the Diamond beach, huge pieces of ice on the beach?! I had a lot of fun looking at them, taking pictures and videos. Too bad that I cannot share them all in my blog. It is just amazing. I am not sure how much times I will use this word in this blog but that is all I can say, amazing! The glaciers melted into the lagoon. Icebergs melted and some float into the sea. The waves push some onto the beach, which are those diamonds…how cool is that!

D5, Jun 22 Zodiac boat and Snowmobile
We arrived at the iceberg lagoon again this morning to get on our boat tour. I went on the hill next to the lagoon which I didn’t go yesterday, and well, it is a lagoon that I can see the end of it. How far can a boat go? I was a little disappointed. But, I kept my mind open..hehe.. you know what? When you are open, things normally turn out to be really awesome, like this zodiac boat tour! We had so much fun. We got so close to the icebergs, even though the captain wouldn’t go through them as I hoped. He thinks they are dangerous as they tip over all the time. We also went closer to the glaciers. I hoped I could touch them, but that didn’t happen either. The stunning view did make it all up for me. Our captain was very knowledgeable about the glaciers and icebergs and shared lot of information about them. The speed of the boat excited me as well, especially on a lagoon full of icebergs. I am so glad we did it. It is just so different to be among them vs being far away and looking at them. Love the experience! I need a hat next time. 😛

Right after the boat tour, we rushed to our snowmobile tour. It turned out that we were the only two on the tour today, woohoo! Our guide Sven was an experienced guide with lots of stories. I felt like we were in the good hand. :) He told us we would be riding on the glaciers, which was different than snow☺️After we were suited, we hopped on the cool jeep and took the Froad up the mountains to our snowmobiles. The trip up was scary but Sven did a great job. He had been up soooo many times.

He briefly told us how it worked and off we went! So grateful that we were the only ones. We drove up to more than 60km/hr for a bit but mostly maintaining 40-50ish speed. Sven said for a tour with 10-20 people like yesterday, the average speed is in the 20s. I felt like I was dancing on the vehicle, but kept remembering he said faster was better than slower, so I sped up when I wanted to slow down naturally. The drive was exciting, and I was glad that I didn’t slow Erik down😉
It was foggy up there today. We had brief moments of sunshine, but not long. It is a different world up on the glaciers, as Sven put it, and it is! Everything is white and everywhere is white. It is quiet and there is barely any other lives…
D6, Jun 23 East driving up to North
Driving east coast to the capital of east Egilsstathir. Rainy and foggy when we left which slowed down our drive. However, when we needed to stop and check out a site, everything stopped. Then when we drove again, it got foggy again…when we got to tow and did our last two activities, the weather was perfect! Couldn’t ask for more.

Highlight of the day is the PUFFINS at Borgarfjordur Eystir. We added in two extra hours driving to far north east to see them and I wasn’t disappointed! I took so many videos and pictures and enjoyed watching them flying off and back. Some were relaxing after a day at the sea. Some were fighting for nests…Our timing for being there was so perfect that we saw hundreds of them 👍

D7, Jun 24 Entering the Diamond Circle
First stop Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Then we stopped Asbyrgi Canyon. We didn’t get on the trail that was on plan initially and we didn’t have time to finish it later when we finally got on it. Well, it wasn’t what I expected anyway, so I didn’t take a picture of the canyon, but two cool hikers in their buff! ☺️ Nice views on the way, and, we saw horses running fast together! In the wild! Well, they were not wild horses. They were running to a tourist horse riding activity, but we got to see them which was interesting for us to see, outside western movies 😆

Nothing is more perfect for us to pick such a perfect day to do whale watching in Husavik. I hesitated to book the tour while planning, because we went whale watching before multiple times and all we saw were their tails couple of times. What else could there be? But, since we were here, why not. It turned out to be the best experience ever!
Nice calm water, beautiful snow top mountains, blue skies…about 20 mins into the sea, we were surrounded by humpback whales. We could see them spouting, rolling their backs and tails…then a group of playful dolphins joined the picture, putting on a show for us. After they left, a group of three humpback whales came and had dinner in front of us! They came up with their mouths open and closed them while diving back in. After that, we moved to the east more and a blue whale came and said hi to us! Like the guide said, when you went out, you never know what the nature would offer, and this evening, we were offered with the best show ever!

D8, Jun 25 Diamond circle D2
This is a geological active area. We saw a lot of different things and learned a lot about volcanoes and lava☺️
- Hverir Geothermal Area; 2. Krafla; 3-5. Leirhnjukur area (This wasn’t in the plan, but we saw many cars there,so we turned around and checked it out. Loved the hike. It was my favorite of the day!); 6. Grjotagja Cave (It was used as a location for filming the fifth episode of the third season of *Game of Thrones); 7.*Hverfjall crater; 8. Dimmuborgir lava field; 9. Skutustadagigar (pseudocraters); 10. Goðafoss waterfall.

My happy moment! Akureyri Chinese food! Before we came to Iceland, I thought it was strange that Chinese people wanted Chinese while in Iceland. Why not try Iceland food? Now I understand. :) I had been looking for good veggie dishes and these dishes were just the right ones😀 A cabbage dish, a toufu dish and a beef dish. They didn’t taste like authentic Chinese food at all, but they hit the spot!

D9, Jun 26 To the West
Long drive today to our hotel. Only one stop on the way which is Kolugljufur Canyon. A very small one with a waterfall. Then we had our sushi boat trip before heading to see the Kirkjufell mountain and checking into our hotel next to the mountain.

It was our first time hearing about sushi boat trip. After a quick fish and chip snack, we boarded the boat. At the dock, a fishing boat was unloading today’s catch. It was a good day for the fishermen, at least I think so. :)
Our boat ride was fun. We stopped by couple of places watched birds nesting on the edges of the rocks. Nice view around. Then the crew lowered down a strong ‘hand’ scratching the bottom of the ocean. Couple minutes later, it came up. Wow, lots of sea urchins and scallops for us to try, and some star fish, small crabs, snails for us to play with!
Both scallops and sea urchins tasted so fresh. We were lucky that only 18 people on this big boat today that we could even had chance to get seconds…😍

D10, Jun 27 West Peninsula
Everyday was a long day and today was no difference. I thought I didn’t schedule so many things, but we had been out about average 10 hours a day lately. Hehe…
Today we just drove around the west peninsula stopping by different sites. There were two beaches, two cliffs, two craters, two waterfalls, two churches, one lighthouse and one thermal spring on my list. We made most of them.

On our way to pick up our 4x4 Jeep for the next four days, when we put in the rental place as our destination after stopping by for grocery shopping, we realized that the rental place was going to close at 6pm and google said we were going to be there 10-15 mins before 6pm due to traffic! What? What if they would leave early? If we couldn’t get our car, our itineraries would be all messed up. Of course I began to worry while driving. Of course, Erik kept saying worry wouldn’t help and I guess he refused to worry. I never refuse Worry. Worry comes to me and I welcome it all the time. When there is no room for Worry, Worry leaves. This 30 mins driving was intense for me. Each time it slowed down or stop at a traffic light, my heart beat faster…until Erik made it through a call with someone who told us by 6pm it should be ok, at which time we were about 10 mins away.
We got there before it closed. We returned our first car with extra charge on 600km over the limit. We got our 4x4, and Erik drive another 2 hours to our hotel for the night. It was another more than 10 hours day.
D11, Jun 28 Landmannarlaugar
In order for this hike to happen, we got our 4x4 yesterday to drive on ‘F’ road. it was a hassle to drive to the airport to exchange cars, but I was glad we did it. Erik did encourage me to do what I wanted to do while I was making planning decisions for this activity. He always says “if you want to do it, do it”. I was glad, but I wasn’t sure if he was after the hike🤭
6 hours of driving and about 4 hours at the mountains were ahead of us today.
In land view was a little different, but beautiful still. The road wasn’t bad until we got to the last hour also of driving. The road wasn’t paved. Some portions had gravels. Some were little muddy with ditches with rain water, but overall I think Erik actually enjoyed driving on these roads. At least I wanted to believe so since he drove the whole time both ways.

The route we hiked took us to Mt. Brennisteinsalda, also called the Sulphur Wave, which is a rainbow-colored mountain in Landmannalaugar. This hike combines the best features of Landmannalaugar: lava fields, geothermal features, and panoramic views. We even got to hike a very short portion of the Laugavegur Trail, Iceland’s most famous multi-day trek. Altogether about 4 miles, 1000ft elevation. Drizzling here and there on our way up, but sun was out when we were up at the top!
Happy hikers in the last picture on the way back. But for the real trip, I think we had only one happy hiker. The other one thought this was a near death experience. The happy hiker believed the ones who didn’t get to hike up there missed a lot, while the other hiker thought those were the smart ones who admired the mountains at the bottom.

Panoramic view at the top.
Erik drove more than 3 hours to our hotel after his “near death experience”. He didn’t understand that he just got strengthened!
D12, Jun 29 Reykjavik
First morning no alarm. It was nice. We took our time getting ready then went to downtown Reykjavik. Went to the Phallological Museum. It was something different. I didn’t know what to expect, but was surprised by what they had, specimens of different animals’ penis.
We had a good lunch after and walked around a little. It was a windy day.

D13, Jun 30 Hverageroi hot spring
We woke up around 8am and went back to sleep until noon. So blessed that we were able to sleep that long. Today, we hiked Reykjadalur hot spring trail and soaked in the natural hot stream at the end of the trail. The trail is 5 miles long and 1134ft elevation. But the bath worth it all. Hot local lamb soup with bread right after hiking. What a nice day!

D14, Jul 1 Leaving Iceland
14 days trip, stayed in 11 hotels. They all had good beds. With 21 hours day light hours, we finally got used to sleep with some light. What we didn’t see in this trip was the night time in Iceland. :)

Erik used all he could to block the light.

We also tried some recommended restaurants when time worked out. Tried many different soup with bread, and different ways of cooking of lobsters and fish, and lamb…and famous hotdog that Bill Clinton once had.

Also tried some snacks, which I wasn’t impressed. Especially the yogurt, everyone said how good it was, but the first bite I had, it tasted chemical favor to me. :( Erik’s yogurt is way better. I think I am spoiled with homemade fresh yogurt. The Iceland chocolate was also advertised everywhere. We bought some right after we landed, but I didn’t think they were good at all. 😕 My favorite was their strawberries and blueberries. Gosh they were soooo good! I had them everyday after I found out they were that good. The lettuce and small cucumbers were also really fresh that we ate a lot…also tried different drinks, sausages, cheese…

10:40pm, we were safely home! What a wonderful trip. Everything worked out beyond our expectations. Everyday, I saw God’s hands being on us. We are so truly blessed. We are so not deserved, but HE loves us and protects us and provides for us. Thank you Father for taking us on such a amazing trip to witness your work!
